Shala McKee, formally known as the Well Rooted Doula, is a postpartum doula and Cultural Anthropologist based in Houston, TX. Originally from Honolulu, HI, Shala began her doula training with Doula Trainings International (DTI). She centers her doula philosophy on three main principles: empathy, autonomy, and authenticity. Shala believes every client has the right to self-determination and supports them in creating the postpartum experience that suits them best.
Shala encourages clients to trust their intuition and their innate ability to care for their baby. She provides a calming touch and evidence-based resources as clients (re)enter their journey into parenthood. Understanding that every family is different, Shala employs active listening, critical thinking, and creates opportunities for feedback to ensure all parties involved feel comfortable. She celebrates clients regardless of their family structure or background, acknowledging and honoring her roots while encouraging clients to do the same.
Shala is known for her warm and kind interactions, yet she is gently firm in her advocacy for friends, family, and clients alike. Her dedication to empathy, autonomy, and authenticity ensures that each family she works with feels supported and empowered. Shala is excited to provide her unique blend of cultural and practical expertise to help families navigate the postpartum period with confidence and ease.
Outside of being a doula, Shala enjoys learning of all kinds, whether through traditional academia or herbalism. She is a trained classical ballet dancer, an avid sudoku player, and a passionate consumer of reality TV. Shala can often be found somewhere near the ocean, where she feels most grounded.
